What is Teams Direct Routing?

Direct Routing allows you to use Microsoft Teams to make inbound and outbound calls on the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), just like a traditional PBX phone system.

How does Direct Routing work?

Direct Routing works by combining the Microsoft Teams system to the PSTN, by utilising a Session Border Controller and SIP Trunks.

Implementation and Set-up

Microsoft Teams

Each customer has different requirements but this is broadly our approach. All of these steps are done with our trained support and onboarding teams and require no in-house expertise on the customer’s side.

Number porting requested and new numbers ordered

The customer simply requests new numbers from Liquidcloud and/or ports their existing ones over. Depending on the provider (and numbers), this process can take anywhere from less than a day to a couple of weeks.

Validate Solution Call Success

Testing inbound and outbound calls is obviously crucial before setting live. We work with our customers to make sure calls are completed and with high-quality audio from a variety of sources.

Customer sets up SIP trunks and SBC

This is self-explanatory; the Session Border Controller and Trunks are the foundations of direct routing. This should take less than a day for a provider that can set up both SBCs and SIP Trunks. To configure Microsoft Phone System and enable users to use Direct Routing, follow these steps:

Customer creates and validates the shared domain for the SBC.

The SBC uses a shared domain for the SBC gateway. Sharing Microsoft Teams and IP details with Liquidcloud  and allows us to check their Teams profile, set up SIP Trunks and an SBC.

  • Step 1. Connect the SBC with Microsoft Phone System and validate the connection

  • Step 2. Enable users for Direct Routing, voice, and voicemail

  • Step 3. Configure voice routing, configure Microsoft Phone System and enable users to use Direct Routing

Licensing and other requirements

Users of Direct Routing must have the following licenses assigned in Microsoft 365:

  • Microsoft Phone System.
  • Microsoft Teams + Business Plan 2, if not included in existing O365 package
  • Microsoft 365 CSP Licencing available from Liquidcloud

Deployment & Training

The best bit: changing your PBX over to Teams! It’s important to make sure you have a plan to train your colleagues on how to use Teams as a phone system, and to make sure any setup from your existing system (hunt groups, calling behaviour etc) is reflected on your Teams instance.
